“Are you both ready for school?” their mother’s voice echoed through the grand hallway.
Lucien and Cassien hurried down the stairs, shoes tapping against the marble. Both boys wore freshly pressed uniforms, but different ones—the reminder that they were heading to separate schools.
“Good morning, Mom,” they both said in unison when they reached the bottom.
“Good morning, darlings.” She smiled warmly, bending to kiss each boy’s forehead. Her touch lingered for a second longer on Lucien, as if to silently reassure him.
Before Lucien could take comfort in that, Gerard’s voice cut through the moment.
“I see you boys have forgotten your manners.”
The man’s deep voice filled the space like thunder. Gerard stood tall, broad-shouldered, dressed sharply even at this hour. His presence always demanded obedience.
