Mrs. Hall’s heart raced as she tried to process the nurse’s words. “A procedure? What kind of procedure?” she demanded, her voice tinged with rising panic. But the truth was that she had an idea, some kind of idea as to why she had been brought here.

And frankly, it would be all her fault. She should have never told Vito about her being pregnant. That was a mistake, a trap that she walked herself right into.

The nurse gave her a reassuring smile, though it did little to calm her nerves. “It’s just a precautionary measure,” she said softly. “We’re going to help you and your baby. Trust me.”
