Chapter 31

Carmela's head was spinning. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Max, her ex-husband, could be facing criminal charges? It was all too much to take in. 

She took a deep breath, trying to focus on Sarah's words. 

"Are you sure about this?" she asked, her voice hoarse. "Where did you hear this?"

Sarah looked her straight in the eye.

 "I have a friend who's an attorney, and he heard about the investigation through the grapevine," she said. "I'm not sure how credible the information is, but I thought you should know about it."

Carmela jumped up from the table, her chair scraping against the floor. 

"I need to go," she said, her voice shaking. "I need to talk to Max." 

She grabbed her purse and headed for the door, not even stopping to say goodbye to Sarah and Andrew. She burst out of the cafe and hailed a cab, giving the address of Max's house.
