Chapter 54

I understood why Sebastian suddenly looked so restless and squeezed his boss’s arm with his fingers curled like claws. The truth is that I had lost concentration due to being so engrossed in the conversation-discussion I was having with Rhiannon, until the subsonic screech of one of those special whistles reached our ears, followed by another and then another. Dr. Donovan stopped short. Sebastian too; he asserted himself ahead of us and quickly blew his whistle a couple of times, at short intervals, to a particular tune.

In a few seconds, five students joined us. Their eyes were wild; one of the boys was shaking like a leaf and hid his tail between his legs.

“We have company!” he declared, between yelps of fear. “It’s big, near the river!”

“Group immediately!” Sebastian ordered them, not without some rudeness.

Without asking for further explanations, I immediately took a defensive position with my fellow man, ahead of Rhiannon and the trembling boys and girls
