Chapter 55
We heard the screams again, and we hesitated no longer.
The race did not last as long as I expected: soon the calls for help became louder, and we emerged into a clearing that was not far from the edge of the aforementioned ravine that Valentina had mentioned. I couldn’t see very well, but I did discern something very clearly: a guy with a fluorescent green coat and a camper’s backpack, who was holding Feodor on the edge of the void:
“HEY!” I shouted, in a roar. “GET AWAY FROM THAT CHILD!”
The man in the green coat had already seen and smelled us; he turned towards us and observed us with green eyes that shone in the semi-darkness. He reacted by jumping back and pulling the wolf-boy with such force that Feodor tripped over his own feet and fell face-first into the snow, far from the ravine. I guided Sebastian towards the boy to protect him and charged towards the feline-smelling guy, reflexively baring my teeth at him.
