Chapter 53
I woke up again when everything was dark.
Sasha was in bed with me, in my arms. I tried to move my right arm to accommodate myself better, and the wounds gave me a tug that made me moan. It was strange to feel pain again, after not even remembering that I had long lacerations on my back and shoulder, almost up to my elbow. I don’t know how the baby got there, but I wasn’t going to object either. Mirko was not there; I did not perceive his breathing behind me or his form in front of his sister when I stretched out my hand to look for him. I couldn’t care about him, I don’t know why. I didn’t feel like I was in danger.
It wasn’t like I had fully woken up either.
I let my head fall back onto the pillow, and I know the digital clock on the nightstand said some weird number the last time I looked at it.
