The sound of cutlery clicking could be heard; everything else in the world was silent. No one spoke. Somehow, Claude and Killian had managed to make everyone walk on eggshells around them—nothing good could be said, and nothing bad could be mentioned. Andrew tried to carry on a conversation, only to be aggressively shut down by a simple look from Killian.

Killian wasn’t paying attention to anyone, not even me. I tried to comfort him, but he just kept pushing me away. My wolf and I could feel his distress, and we could also feel his coldness.

My mind kept wandering back to what Nana Helen had said previously. Who was Caroline, and why was she important? I couldn’t let it go. I thought I was the first in Killian’s life. After all, he had told me that he had been waiting for me—his intended mate.
