My wolf had gone mute when she sensed the creature’s perversion of nature. I swallowed hard.
“I—I’m okay,” I murmured to myself, though I wasn’t convinced. The images would be seared into my mind forever. And worse, I realized that Daniel—my mate, my protector—had hidden something from me. My voice was raw when I spoke.
“Daniel… there must be more like him. They’re out there.” I took a step back, chest heaving.
He frowned, eyes shifting to the unconscious husk on the ground. Then he returned his gaze to me, conflicted. “Elizabeth…”
I pressed on, “You know more than you’re telling me. Why wouldn’t you say anything?” My words were a rush, desperate to spill it all out.
Daniel’s shame flickered in his eyes. He drew in a long breath before answering, “You’re right.”
