“Elizabeth!” Daniel’s voice cut through the chaos behind me. I froze, my heart pounding as I turned slowly. “What are you doing here? I told you to leave with the boy.” His tone was furious, every syllable edged with rage. Even more unsettling was how his eyes flickered, shifting colors in the dim torchlight.
I swallowed and tried to steady myself. “I was going to take the boy to the—” I stuttered, my words trailing off as I took in his appearance from head to toe. He looked unharmed.
