“Make sure you clean that up before you leave,” Alex called out casually from behind me.
I froze, every nerve ending alight with shock and rage. He’d seen me. I turned slowly. There he stood, shirtless and sweaty, the picture of indifference. My chest pulsed with both hurt and fury.
Sophia rose from her knees too, slipping into one of Alex’s oversized white shirts. She smirked at me, her warmth replaced by cruelty. “Oh, you’re finally pregnant?” she said, voice dripping with false sympathy. “And you didn’t even bother to call me, your best friend?”
I couldn’t speak. My throat felt clogged with bile and tears. Then Sophia spat out, “That bastard baby is going to be—”
“Bastard?” The word was a whip across my face. My hand rose on its own. I landed a sharp slap across her cheek. Regret and shock froze my limbs as she swung back. A loud crack echoed. Her stunned expression twisted into a sneer.
