“Why’d you do it, Gareth?” I asked.

He folded his arms and lifted his shoulders.

“Don’t play dumb with me.”

“I knew Gabbie could defend herself. We all know it. We’ve seen it first-hand.”

I narrowed my eyes on him. He refused to look me in the eyes. I knew there was more to it. A knock came from the door, and Gareth’s little assistant walked in.

“Oh, I didn’t know you were in a meeting.”

“As my assistant isn’t it your job to know?” Gareth said through gritted teeth.

“Oh, I…”

“Never mind, Elowen, what do you want?”

She seemed to get smaller with each growl. She fiddled with her fingers and stared at the ground. “Alpha Knox is here and wants a status report, but you told me not to give anyone who is authorised—”

“Just give it to him and don’t bother until I need you.”

She bowed. “Yes, Alpha.”

The door clicked shut behind her. I turned to him and raised a brow.
