Iris still trembled, remembering the harsh words of Evangeline Laurier. What else had she expected from her mother’s employer? It was a relief that she hadn’t recognized her yet. Or her life would have been shattered. Maybe the costume had saved her this time. But for how long? Surely at the next meeting, she would recognize her.

Maddox had disappeared too immediately after she left, without even glancing at her. Was he mad at her for not changing out of the uniform? She had been so nervous; it had escaped her mind. Their heated arguments had made her cower. She hadn’t expected Mrs. Laurier to barge into her room.
