Book 5: We Can’t Do This

Iris nodded in confusion. Although her heart wanted to somersault with happiness, she calmed herself. She had no idea what he was going through and how long it would take him to settle his issues.

Was that a promise she could count on? What guarantee was there that he would stick to his word? What if he didn’t? 

“I understand.” She wanted to ask him so many questions. Yet nothing came to her lips. All she could see were his bruises. He had injured himself while fighting for her honor. This was the second time he had saved her.

Maddox released a staggering sigh, closing his eyes momentarily for control. When he opened his eyes, his face was solemn and grim.

“You should be more careful, Iris. I won’t be there to save you every time. You must act responsibly, even when you’re upset. Can you imagine what would have happened if I hadn’t reached you on time?” 

A shudder went up her spine. She couldn’t imagine what would have happened if he hadn’t saved her
