Adrian’s POV

“But I do not love Roxy,” I said. “I see her only as a sister… the sister I never had!”

“And who is responsible for that as well?” she flared up again. “The Merryweathers of course!”

I looked sad. I had been so happy at the birthday party with Iris. I had thought that sunshine had finally come into my life but that was not to be because of a useless enmity between our families and a useless promise I made. Mum was still my mother and I wanted to make her happy. I already made the vow and I could not refute it but I also could not let Iris go. I wanted her by my side.

“I cannot marry Roxy,” I started, the next set of words, feeling like they were being dragged out of me. “I shall marry Iris!” I insisted.

“So you are going back on your word to avenge me? You love this Iris more than your word as an Alpha and more than the mother who has loved and cared for you, since you were born?” she asked, her hurt tearing my heart apart.
