Chapter 9
Maya’s POV
I dove into the churning water with my arms folded across my chest and my legs straight, slicing beneath the surface like an arrow. The cold closed in around me, and I instinctively shut my eyes as the sea swallowed me in seconds. I kicked upward as fast as I could, bursting through the surface with a gasp, desperate for air. Saltwater stung my eyes, so I rubbed them with the back of my hand until I could see. Above me, the plane was already climbing into the clear blue sky, its metal skin gleaming in the sunlight.
“Ha!” I exhaled, relief flooding through me as I leaned back to float. My body trembled as I allowed myself a moment’s rest.
