Lucky for me, Bogdan is a bad shot. He fires the crossbow, but it misses me, the arrow hitting the ground beside me. The sound makes several of the shifters burst into tears. Most of the group turns tail and runs, their survival instincts pushing them to run as fast and far away as they can.
Lydia grabs the edge of my jacket with her mouth and pulls me toward where the others are running. I don’t need to be told twice and follow them. I have to keep a slower pace not to leave the shifters behind. Several arrows are fired behind us, and I’m almost hit more than a few times. Bogdan really is a miserable shot. He's going to have to get very lucky to hit any of us, but then, it's not impossible, so we keep running.
The sun is beginning to set. The sky looks like a blood-soaked field as the shifters run for freedom. They know this is their last chance to get away. If they get caught again, there will be no other chances. They'll all end up feeder
