Book 4: Enemy or Ally?

The forest expands ahead of me, the trees casting long shadows in the silver moonlight. I might be going insane–because there’s no way that vampire is still alive. She can’t be. I’d barely made out of those mountains myself. 

But her scent was there, just beyond the castle grounds, far too close for comfort. 

‘Where are you?’ Deacon says, his voice booming through my head against the totally silent silver forest. 

I give him my location, but I’m nearly ten miles into the forest now, and I’ve lost her scent completely. 

I know the forest stretches on for several more miles before thinning out into a flood plain. Beyond that, a wide, snaking river splits my kingdom from Scarlet Thunder, and further across the river, from Red River. There’s a few villages that dot throughout the forest, but all of them are close to the castle, like Ravenfell. 

This, however, is no-man’s land.
