I probably could have done one out of a hundred different things rather than throwing his own body part at him. But, I didn’t regret it. The others worked at the tight ropes that bound me while the dragon slithered closer. I was looking at my death. The golden eyes glinting with streaks of red, the coal black wings, the claws reaching for me, still stained red with the blood of those that would sacrifice their lives for me.

I would die here but at least I hadn’t died with my tail between my legs. I’d stood up for myself for once in my life, and he wouldn’t get a moment of satisfaction from me while I still lived.

Nicholas got up from the ground, shaking his massive head. He could barely walk, his body swerving one way or the other, but he got his feet beneath him and lunged at Eagon’s back.

The dragon’s tail burst from his human skin as he continued to shift, and he grabbed Nicholas with it, squeezing him. Norman left my side next. He jumped for
