I texted him that my class was over, but I didn’t hear back from him. My mind wandered and began to spiral as more time passed. Esme kept her movements light and her gaze heavy. I know she wanted to say a lot, but she refrained, and I was grateful for that.
I dry my face and place my toothbrush in the holder. Maybe he got caught up doing something. I slide into bed, pulling the covers up high. I close my eyes, trying to keep my mind from running rampant. My phone shrills in the quiet of my room. I hurry and pick it up, connecting the call. “Are you in bed?”
“Yes, it’s late.”
“It isn’t too late. Get dressed and come outside.”
“Adolf, I have an early class tomorrow. It’s pretty la-”
