Even though I knew convincing Ms. Quisha to lie for me would be challenging given her strong religious principles, I steeled myself and went for it anyway.
“Ms. Quisha… please? I wouldn’t ask you to do this if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. Auntie would be so heartbroken if Lee doesn’t show up,” I pleaded, my lips pouting as I clung to her arm as though that gesture alone would help sway her decision.
We were in the nurses’ on-call room at the time, and by chance, our break times overlapped, giving me the perfect opportunity to talk to her privately.
“All you have to do is say that I’m scheduled to work that Saturday. Just tell her I have a shift that coincides with Auntie’s birthday party in the afternoon. You can also mention that we’re short-staffed that day and that even though I protested, I had no choice but to go to work,” I explained, still with a hopeful pout. I tightened my grip on her arm, trying to emphasize my desperation.
