“Oh my god…”
Mommy suddenly clutched both of her temples, her fingers pressing against them as if trying to steady herself. The spoon she had been holding slipped from her grip, clattering onto her plate before falling onto the table. The sharp sound made Daddy and me immediately turn to her.
I looked into Mommy’s eyes, and my breath caught in my throat when I saw the way her tears started to well up, shimmering under the dining room lights. She didn’t blink them away. She didn’t even try.
Just as they were about to fall, she abruptly pushed back her chair, the wooden legs scraping against the floor. Then, without a word, she stood up and rushed out of the dining area.
“Ash, baby… stay there and continue eating your food,” Daddy said in a calm but firm voice before following after her.
