The moment I caught sight of the street sign—Clara St.—tears welled up in my eyes. I tried to hold them back, but the second our house came into view, sitting directly across from Lee’s, they spilled over, tracing hot paths down my cheeks.
And then, when I saw the harsh white light glowing from Lee’s living room window, my chest tightened painfully.
Through that window, a large white curtain was drawn, barely swaying with the evening breeze. In front of it stood an arrangement of flowers—white, cream, and soft yellow. I didn’t know exactly what kind they were, but that didn’t matter.
They were mourning flowers.
Mommy didn’t even hesitate. The moment we reached Lee’s house, she wanted to see her best friend, wanted to be near her one last time. So, we parked right in front, stepped out of the car, and entered the house in silence.
There, at the center of the room, were two caskets placed side by side.
