Garrison POV
The heavy ambulance doors slammed shut, sealing us inside.
A paramedic pressed fresh gauze against the side of Kelsey’s head while another monitored the machine clipped to her finger. The cramped compartment smelled sharply of antiseptic and blood.
She hadn't opened her eyes since the parking garage.
Since she had looked directly at me and whispered—Gary.
My hands were stained red. I stared at my palms as though they belonged to someone else.
Six years of searching for her, and within hours of finally finding her, I was sitting beside another stretcher while someone tried to stop her bleeding.
“Are you family?” the paramedic asked.
My gaze lifted to Kelsey.
The answer caught somewhere in my throat. “No.”
He nodded. “You'll have to wait outside once we reach the ER.”
“I understand.”
