Genevieve POV
I had never sat idle in my adult life.
Yet here I was, planted in a stiff leather chair outside a glass-walled conference room, under harsh fluorescent lights, waiting for auditors to finish “reviewing sensitive documentation.”
A receptionist had offered me a polite smile and asked me to wait. I had inclined my head, lowered myself gracefully into the chair, and smoothed my skirt—an actress mastering her minor indignity.
I smoothed my skirt once, then again, before realizing there was not a wrinkle left to fix.
Forty-seven minutes later, the door clicked open. Three auditors spilled out, laptops and thick binders in hand. The lead auditor, Graham Steele—a thin-faced man with alert eyes—paused when he spotted me.
