Chapter 15

James

I’m standing outside the Milner’s mansion, Kate standing in front of me. I pulled her out, so we can talk about her sudden moodiness today. She had been acting strangely ever since we walked in to see her dad. Initially, I thought she missed him so much that she was acting up a bit. However, she looked very upset at dinner, and I couldn’t ignore it for much longer.

Now, she’s standing here, completely avoiding my gaze and still looking upset. I wait for a while, so she could start speaking because it seems as though she has a lot to say. When it becomes obvious that she wouldn’t say anything unless I probe her, I start to question her behavior.

“What was all that about today, Kate?” I ask. She doesn’t look at me.

“What was all what about, James?” She turns to face me now. I sigh. Judging by the defensive arms folded across her chest, I can tell she’s ready to go all night with this back and forth. I stare at her while thinking of the best possible way t
