Chapter 48
"Now tell me about this law you want to have overturned," she continued.
We told her everything, from my attack to my father burning the surveys.
"You were right to be opposed to this law," she remarked. "It's despicable."
"How did you let him do these things for so long?" I questioned.
"Love will make you do stupid things," she predicted. "Permit me to return to the council with my new evidence."
We went back downstairs and saw Mr. Johnson still smiling cockily outside the meeting room.
"Say your goodbyes, Mr. Johnson," my mother said. "You can withdraw your petition now or join my husband in a cell."
That took the foolish grin off his face.
"But I was chosen," he exclaimed, terrified. "The king said I should do this."
"I already told you where that got him," she explained as she walked into the meeting
