Chapter 29. Secret Plans

Since the death of her grandmother, Ainsley hasn’t been able to get out of bed.
Days go by with her barely moving from the spot I’d tucked her into the night we were visited by her cousin and Iris, and she’s only doing enough to sit up when I try to force water down her throat. No matter what I do, she seems to fall deeper and deeper into her sorrow, with no way for me to pull her out long enough to get her to talk to me.
I know how much her grandmother meant to her. It’s hard to mourn people you never got to properly say goodbye to. Death sometimes is a sudden and cruel mistress, striking at a time when you least expect it.
These feelings are no stranger to me and had once been the only things I carried on as a legacy left from my pack. It took so long to pull myself out of those dark times that I hesitated to let Ainsley go into a near-catatonic state.
I wouldn’t be a good mate if I let her do that to herself.
