“Iris, please think about this before you jump the gun. This is a permanent choice. If you do this, there is no going back. You’ll be stuck in this bond for life,” I say.
But of course, she isn’t listening to me. Why would she?
This is the first time she’s been able to directly contribute to the fight—to saving Koen’s life. For this entire journey, Iris has been on the sidelines watching, helpless as the people around her have been hurt and unwillingly pitting against entities that want to see us all dead. Forced into a war they never wanted by a man who could now no longer be held accountable.
Right now she has the chance to change that. At least for one person.
I don’t think I have any chance of talking her out of this but I have to try. Because if I don’t, if something goes wrong, if something happens to her, it’ll kill me.
I can’t let more blood stain my hands.
“You could die if it doesn’t work out,” I try again.
