When I was ready, I went downstairs and didn’t see Rhys as I expected. My first instinct was to check on him in his room, but I changed my mind. There was no reason I could not return to the festivities by myself.

I took the servants’ passage, feeling more comfortable in my changed dress. The red dress was pretty but fussy, and the hot weather made it hard for me to appreciate it.

The new one was just as elegant, but simpler in style, and its peach color made my skin look rosy. It came with tiny straps and a fitted bodice that flared from the tops of my knees down to my feet. I hung its wrap around my neck like a scarf.

In my room, I had more time to think about my existing, nameless relationship with Rhys. Sincerely, I enjoyed having sex with him, but I also liked the safety of labels.
