The familiar bell above the door jingled when I entered the diner. Deb immediately smiled toward me but when she saw that it was me, her smile got bigger and more genuine. She winked in my direction as I headed toward my spot in the back.

“Hey, sugar. What brings you in this early?” She put a glass of water in front of me before raising the coffee canteen in her hand, silently asking if I wanted some?
