The Previous Sunday
I lined up my putt on the eighth hole, the sun warm on my back as I studied the slight break in the green. The perfect day for golf: clear skies, light breeze, and the satisfaction of watching Anthony struggle through every hole.
“You’re taking forever,” Anthony complained from the edge of the green. “It’s a three-foot putt, not brain surgery.”
I took my time just to annoy him further, then sank the ball with a clean stroke. “That’s another birdie for me. What are you at now? Double bogey?”
“Fuck you,” Anthony muttered, marking his scorecard with more force than necessary.
As we walked to our golf cart, Anthony glanced around the course. “Where’s Leo? Wasn’t he supposed to join us today?”
“He said he’d come,” I replied, sliding into the driver’s seat. “Probably got caught up with work. You know how he is.”
