It was obvious that if she were pushed a step further, she would burst into tears.

“It’s fine, but are you okay?” he asked softly, as if he was afraid of scaring her away.

“Yeah,” she said shortly and turned sideways to go upstairs.

Xavier was about to come in when the conversation started. He did not want to make them feel uncomfortable or interrupt, so he waited outside until they were done. What seemed like a normal conversation at first turned into a life story, with Jessica not holding back about how she felt about having her as an aunt.

Xavier cleared his throat and entered the room. He wanted to go after Jessica, but it was obvious that she needed some time to herself.

“Why did you make my wife cry?”

Olivia was startled; she did not see Xavier come in. “What do
