Chapter 52

Lila’s POV

My desk was full of papers, just how I liked it, neat and easy to understand. My life usually felt the same way, planned and clear, then Jake Ramirez came along.

First, he called after our work talk, I quickly said I was busy. The next time, he left a message about an “important legal matter” that was really just about a new Italian restaurant, I almost hung up. Almost.

Then flowers arrived. Bright orange roses. Crazy.

The card said, “Thought your office needed some sunshine. - J.”

I rolled my eyes, but a tiny smile, one I didn’t want, showed up on my face. They were too cheerful. I put them on my desk, and they just sat there, a big sign he wasn’t giving up.

The next morning, as I was sitting down with my perfect coffee, my assistant told me, “Mr. Ramirez is here, Ms. Dubois. He has coffee.”

I sighed a little inside. “Send him in.”

Jake Ramirez walked into my office, looking too happy. He held two hot coffee
