Maya’s POV

I paced Daniel’s big living room, my heart pounding, Daniel standing there, letting Ellie claim him, I was just so angry.

The front door suddenly burst open. Daniel walked in, looking tired and messy, like he’d been in a fight; his eyes wide and frantic. Jake was right behind him, looking serious and watchful.

Daniel barely noticed me. He went straight to the window, pulling out his phone. He stared at the screen, then let out a frustrated sound, slamming the phone onto a marble table.

“She won’t answer,” he mumbled, his voice rough. “She won’t listen.”

“Can you blame her?” Jake finally asked, his voice calm but sharp. “You just let your ex tell everyone you’re getting married on TV. What did you think would happen?”

Daniel turned, his eyes begging. “It wasn’t like that, Jake! Ellie set me up. She brought the cameras. I didn’t see it coming!” He sounded truly upset.

“Didn’t see it coming?” I cut in, my voice full of doubt.
