Chapter 44. I Have to Avoid Him
“I think I’m ready.” I smiled at the maids, and they immediately curtsied, still wary of my presence. I suddenly missed Louella and Cindy and their friendly smiles and giggles whenever they put their skillful hands on me as they prepared me for situations like this. I missed Cindy’s encouraging words when she knew I was scared.
I took the mask from the top of the vanity mirror and headed downstairs. I immediately saw Hannah as I descended the stairs, and for a second, I realized that all the eyes in the hall were staring at me, watching me step down the grand staircase.
With shivering hands and facial muscles tensed in panic, I walked toward Hannah as graciously as I could, trying to look unfazed by the few seconds of stillness in the crowd, as if the world had stopped spinning when I came down to meet all of them.
