Chapter 70. I Don't Belong to Anyone!

My lips stretched into a wide smile as excitement suddenly erased all the ugly feelings I felt inside me. I quickly opened the letter and then embarrassingly remembered I could not read, which Jeff noticed when my shoulders drooped and my smile faded slowly.

He smiled at me and said, “It’s ok, Claire. There’s no reason to be sad. It’s from Marie. Here, let me read it for you,” he said nicely, taking the letter from my hand.

I looked at him and mouthed thank you and he just grinned at me before he cleared his throat and read the letter. “Claire,” he started and then my eyes suddenly welled with tears because I missed her and old Marina so badly. “I hope you’re doing fine. Me and old Marina are always praying for your safety, no matter where you are. We miss you.”

Losing control of the sadness inside me, my tears started falling down my face as sobs emerged from my swelling throat. Jeff gave me a reassuring smile and gently rubbed my back to soothe the heavy feeling
