Chapter 9. The Master's Bedroom
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
I had never seen a place grander than Rutherford Manor.
It was almost midnight when the carriage arrived at the main entrance. The whole area was cold, and I could only hear the sound of the crickets that disturbed the tranquil silence of the night. I was humiliated that the Alpha didn’t want the people to know that I had already arrived at the manor, and all that came to greet me were the maidservants who kept on ogling at me from head to foot.
Feeling uncomfortable and ashamed, I hated that I hadn’t thought of wearing a more dignified dress. I looked down at myself; all I saw were my old, worn-out boots and my stained, ten-year-old dress. Master Ralph used to offer me pretty dresses before, but I kept on refusing because I never wanted the people in his place to think that he favored me a lot more than the others.
