I wasn’t the kind of man who sent people to spy on the woman I loved.

At least, I never thought I would be.

Hell, Alaria was not a woman that I would spy on. Whether or not she was my lover, even in the past, I never gave myself a reason to do so. She was never the woman to betray.

But something in Alaria’s eyes, something distant, something cracked just beneath her smile, left me with no choice. And Kai, as much as he hesitated, didn’t say no. And I wasn't even looking for something to prove against her. I was looking for what was bothering her to protect her from, to keep her safe, not to harm her.

He stood in front of me again, his arms crossed, his jaw set in that way that meant he was holding something back.

“Well?” I asked, trying to keep my voice level. “Did you see anything? You've been quiet since you came back. I can assume that there is something that you want to tell me.”
