As Sephora and I walked away, I strained to listen to what he was saying to his men. I wished he would let me stay. I just wanted to help. I looked up at Sephora and as much as she tried to hide it, she looked exhausted and worn out. Her face was stained with blood and her arms and legs still had cuts and scrapes that were still healing.
“I’m glad that we all made it out,” she said wearily. Her voice was weak and lacking the usual vigor. Despite her tiredness, her lips curved into little smiles and I had every reason to believe that I knew who she was thinking about. She was so lucky to have him.

We saw her talking to a guard and as soon as we approached, he left.
Her lips were drawn in a hard line. Her old eyes looked tired as well. I couldn’t imagine how hard it was for her to attend to all these injured people.
