She appeared to be in tears. She was shaking uncontrollably, her body trembling violently. She opened her mouth but no words came out. For a moment I feared that it was all an illusion and that she was going to vanish at any second, but then the woman slowly raised her head in my direction, her tearful eyes staring straight into mine, and mouthed something.
“Help.”
My mind went blank. I was frozen in place, not moving or breathing as she continued to stare at me, pleading silently with me to save her. Suddenly, she dropped to her knees and broke eye contact. She laid down on her side and buried her head in her hands.

“No,” I stammered. My breath caught in my throat as the woman shook her head frantically.

My brain struggled to comprehend her words.
