Chapter 99. The Truth’s Out

My heart was beating fast. He knows Magdalene.
I wanted to ask, but it seemed like Mr. Jakob was suddenly lost in his thoughts. He stood up and clutched the letter in his hands. He paced through the floors of the office from one direction to another.
I waited, patient enough to give him the time to settle and compose himself. It’s like I’m not the only one who’s shocked by the news. Mr. Jakob massaged his forehead, and I read it as a sign of uneasiness. Whoever this Magdalene was, surely, she was someone dear to him.
“Mr. Jakob, do you need something? Water or… anything?”
I asked when the silence stretched to five minutes. The air in the room shifted to being uncomfortable, and he seemed to be more distracted than uneasy.
“No, just… give me a minute,” he responded, his voice cracking at the end of the statement.
I nodded. I felt like I should be doing something to help him, but… I decided not to. He’s certainly deliberating on somethin
