Lucas’s POV

Micheal arrived twenty minutes later. He walked into the bar room and stood next to me.

“It’s rare to see you stay in town for this long,” I pointed out. “Or is there a reason why you are still in town?”

“My commander decided to let me handle some stuff here before coming back.”

I nodded in understanding and sipped my drink. I motioned for him to sit down but he didn’t.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I know you are trying so hard not to lash out at me right now. Just like Cassie said, I was a coward. I should have stepped forward and protected her in your place.”

“I totally agree with her,” I said as my eyes bored into his. “But then, what could you have done when my mother and grandfather were against her? Nothing you said or did would’ve changed their minds.”

Micheal’s jaw tightened. “That doesn’t make it right.”

“No, it doesn’t,” I agreed. “You should have at least tried.”
