Chapter 48. A City of Dreams

Ava’s POV

I was fixing the collar of my blazer in the mirror while Sophie was rushing around the room with a paper bandage on her arm.

“They said they’re going to paint, go on a treasure hunt, and have ice cream.” she gushed about the activities for the kid’s vacation program.

“That does sound nice.” I tried to smile back.

Max had arranged everything. He had made sure the hotel had a program for kids and Sophie, as you can probably imagine, jumped on the idea. As much as I was not completely comfortable with leaving Sophie by herself in a foreign country. But Max, always so convincing, assured me there would be security, trained personnel, and other kids her age to keep her company.

But I could not shake the anxious feeling in my stomach.

“Ready?” Max interrupted my thoughts.

“As I’ll ever be,” I replied.

He walked over to Sophie and squatted down in front of her. “Now listen, kiddo. Be on your best behavior. No running astray o
