Chapter 57. He Won’t Be Coming Back
Ava’s POV
As Max answered the call, his body stiffened and his finger clenched into a fist. His voice was low and harsh. I had no idea what he was saying, but I didn’t need to hear to know that it was something bad.
“Max?” I moved closer to him. “What’s going on? You don’t look okay.”
He turned back to look at me. As our eyes met, I noticed something behind his eyes was; fear.
“It’s just work,” he dismissed it. “Nothing of any significance.”
But there was a hint in his voice that he was withholding something from me. What was he afraid of?
“Are you sure?” I pushed him.
He forced a smile. “Yes. Why don’t you go tell Mason that Sophie’s surgery was successful? He’ll be glad to know she’s safe.”
It was obvious that he was trying to distract me. “Alright.” I nodded and turned to leave
