On Tony’s face was clearly written that he would rather not have the conversation, but of course he would have to, because Alicia was not going to give up on the question and there was Helen sitting next to him and eager to hear a gist he was not going to get any pleasure from giving.

“Well, I got hit by a group of guys and it happens that I was only with Lilian. Where is she, anyway?” he asked suddenly.

“It’s late, Mister, and she has to be home,” Helen supplied.

He nodded.

“I see. What was I saying?”

“You were saying you had been with Lilian when a group of guys had you beaten up,” Alicia said.

“Yeah. That is right. We had an argument and they waited for us in the open lot. I had given some guy a little token to let us park in the lot while we got what we had to get down the road, and these guys had gone there to wait for me.”

“I want to get the full story. Whose car was it that you needed to park?”

“It was Sam’s car for god’s sakes.
