Chapter 68
Ruth shook her head in denial, twisted her wrist and slipped it out of his hands. Ruth sighed heavily, letting her hands drop to the sides. She was out of breath.
She wished and longed for a hug. All she wanted was for him to show a little emotion, hold her in his arms and assure her everything was going to be fine.
“Just stay away from me, stay away from me. Do what they want you to do. I’m done, I’m tired of holding on to something that you aren’t. I’m tired of trying to give this a name, I’m tired, Clay, I’m tired.” Snot was running down her nose. She never believed Clayton would put her through so much humiliation to prove a point. He claimed it without remorse; rather, he blamed it on the pressure.
“What did your mother say? I was a gold digger. Your father said you deserved better.” She shook her head again in affirmation to her own words. “Then go and never show your face here.” She pushed him back with her two hands.
