Zoey found her mother standing in the hallway, eyes slightly red, but Mei quickly wiped her face and forced a smile.

“Mom? Were you crying?”

“No,” Mei said lightly. “Just allergies. Let’s go.”

She hooked Zoey’s arm and led her back to the suite before the girl could ask anything else.

Inside, Robert was seated on the couch, sipping tea. Jun and Chloe were nearby, the atmosphere tense.

Robert looked up. “Good, you’re back. I’ve been thinking… I want to invite Charlotte and her boyfriend to a family dinner.”

The room exploded instantly.

Mei blinked. “What?!”

Zoey shrieked, “You can’t be serious!”

Chloe muttered, “Dad, no.”

Jun scoffed loudly. “I wouldn’t advise that.”

Robert didn’t even look his way. “You don’t have a say in this.”

“Dad, that was rude!” Chloe snapped.

Robert continued ignoring her. “As I was saying—”

Mei cut in. “Honey, why this decision all of a sudden?”
