Chapter 30
When Antoine woke up under the dusty floorboards of an abandoned apartment attic near Edgar’s home, the sun had already been set for a while. He must have been tired or perhaps depressed when he went to sleep to rest for so long. He sighed sadly as he brushed himself off, then climbed out the broken window onto the roof of the building he had chosen to roost in. He knew that he couldn’t return to Edgar’s as Pierre would be able to locate him there. He traveled a safe distance to the Mews and quickly fed on a young thief who, hopefully, no one would miss in the bustling streets below. Then, it was time to contact Edgar.
He closed his eyes and summoned his vampire child in his mind, using his maker’s abilities to call Edgar to him. As he waited, he sat down and watched the mortals below him go about their nightly tasks. Most of them were blissfully unaware that vampires existed, and he wished he had left Pierre alone to live that same innocent life.
