Chapter 138. The Shift
Maggie POV
In our kingdom, the custom is to have the parent of the same sex prepare the teenager for the first time they shift. Small talks with my mother about this day have peppered my life. She would share tidbits here and there, answer my questions, provide small tips that she wasn’t sure I’d even remember when I turned eighteen.
The true preparation traditionally begins on one’s seventeenth birthday and continues throughout the year. Mothers advise their daughters, particularly on matters that are relevant to the female anatomy during the shift, and fathers assist their sons in a similar way.
But I haven’t seen my mother since I was sixteen. Precious time was lost when I should have been preparing for this moment.
And since I don’t have all the answers, the shift hits me hard.
