“Please don’t forget about Raelyn and her children,” I tell Mother.

“Dear, that’s the fourth time you’ve reminded me,” she says. “We’ll find them and make sure they get everything they need.” I open my mouth to add something, but she cuts me off, saying, “Including plenty of blueberry muffins for the little boy.”

I let out a breath. “Thank you,” I tell her. “I know I’m being a pain. I just don’t want to go back on any of my promises to these people—my people. They’ve been let down so many times, for so many years.”
